You can always see changes taking place in the file on the fly. It is very usefull for monitoring log files of applications - e.g. Apache's error.log and access.log. Screenshot TailMe can monitor several log files at the same time and provides a more expressive output than console"tail" programs can do. Functions: o add/remove monitor files at runtime o automatic purge of text buffer o resizeable monitor windows o possibility to minimize TailMe into the system tray o lines with special (user-defined) key words are written in different colors o shrinked log files are symbolized with a horizontal line o stop/continue monitoring via double click in the window area of the corresponding monitor file o list of "recent files" is available and saved in the INI file o drag&drop of files from the Explorer

The key difficulty is, that log messages are event based by nature - whereas Nagios is based on states. Check_mk's logwatch mechanism overcomes this problem by defining the critical state for a logfile as "no unacknownledged critical log messages". At the beginning of the monitoring a logfile starts in the state OK - regardless of its contents. When a new critical message is seen in the file, it is stored on the Nagios server for reference by the administrator. The state of the logfile changes to CRITICAL and stays in that state unless the administrator acknowledges the messages. New critical messages arriving while in CRITICAL state are simply being stored and do not change the state. Check_mk provides a webpage logwatch.php that displays log messages and allows the delete (and thus acknowledge) them in an easy way:

Wh...This document provides an in-depth look at the process used in trying to solve real issues with the User Experience of a social bookmarking application. While it might be easy to simply take the first solution that works and assume that it’s the best solution, the first solution is very rarely the best solution. We found several solutions to several problems, and many of them worked and appeared to be decent solutions. It was only upon further investigation and doing more detailed research that we found hidden flaws in some solutions, issues with user satisfaction in other solutions, and even found some solutions that broke entirely under certain conditions. This paper will describe the problems we faced in detail and then provide an explanation of the solutions evaluated for each problem, including the benefits and drawbacks of each solution. We will also identify the final solution chosen and why it was chosen.
