Peru steht kurz davor, im Rahmen des Programms "One Laptop per Child" (OLPC) 486.500 Laptops an seine ärmsten kleinen Bürger zu verteilen. Werden die Geräte an die Kinder in den Slums von Lima gehen? "Nein", sagt Oscar Becerra, Direktor für Bildungstechnologien des Landes, "sie sind nicht arm genug." Das klingt wie ein geschmackloser Scherz, aber tatsächlich erklärte Becerra dann, dass die Einwohner von Lima normalerweise elektrischen Strom und zumindest theoretisch Zugang zu städtischen Diensten und sogar Internetcafés haben. Die Laptops gehen deshalb an 9000 winzige Schulen in abgelegenen Gegenden wie Huancavelica in den Anden, zwölf lange Busstunden entfernt von der Hauptstadt, oder Dörfer wie Tutumberos in der Amazonas-Region, mehrere Tagesreisen entfernt.

It's all about shipping kit, says Ivan Krstić in an incendiary essay.
"I quit when Nicholas told me — and not just me — that learning was never part of the mission. The mission was, in his mind, always getting as many laptops as possible out there; to say anything about learning would be presumptuous, and so he doesn't want OLPC to have a software team, a hardware team, or a deployment team going forward," writes Krstić.

Laut Mitteilung sollen ab Juni erste Geräte an Schüler in Entwicklungsländer ausgeliefert werden. Windows XP soll Teil eines Softwarepakets sein, das 3 US-Dollar kosten soll. Da die Aufgabe, das Bildungsniveau in armen Ländern zu heben für eine Organisation zu groß sei, wollen Microsoft und OLPC zusammen mit Regierungen und Nichtregierungsorganisationen kooperieren.
Die Verfügbarkeit von Windows neben dem zuvor schon für den Laptop angepassten Linux soll den Kunden eine erweiterte Möglichkeit bieten, die ihren Bedürfnissen am besten entsprechende Software zu nutzen, heißt es weiter in der Mitteilung. Es habe Anfragen gegeben, da die Kunden bereits vorhandene Windows-Lernsoftware nutzen wollten. Angestrebt wird eine XO-Version, auf der beide Betriebssysteme lauffähig sind und per Dual-boot gestartet werden können. Laut Medienberichten wird dafür der Oktober anvisiert. Pläne, die Microsoft im Januar noch dementiert hatte. OLPC-Gründer Nicholas Negroponte ergänzt, man arbeite daran, das Nutzerinterface Sugar auf Windows zu portieren

Our suspicions were confirmed by OLPC who responded to our inquiries and told us directly that the project has no intention of dropping Linux.
