Welcome to Apache Isis Apache Isis is a full-stack open source application development framework, designed to let you rapidly develop domain-driven business enterprise applications. The framework is designed around two patterns: * the first is the naked objects pattern, whereby the framework automatically generates an object-oriented user interface (OOUI) for your domain objects. If required, this OOUI can then be customized. * the second is the hexagonal architecture. This means it allows the same domain model to be run with different viewers, either as a desktop app or as a webapp. Equally, you can choose which object store to use in order to persist your domain objects. The diagram below shows the hexagonal architecture as it is implemented by Apache Isis.

The Open Group's SOA Source Book is a collection of source material for use by enterprise architects working with Service-Oriented Architecture. It consists of material that has been considered and in part developed by The Open Group's SOA Working Group. The SOA Working Group is engaged in a work program to produce definitions, analyses, recommendations, reference models, and standards to assist business and information technology professionals within and outside of the Open Group to understand and adopt SOA. The source book does not represent the final output of that work program, which will be published as a collection of Open Group Standards and Guides. It is an interim publication, and its content will not necessarily be reflected in the final output. The material reflects input from a large number of people from a wide range of Open Group member companies, including product vendors, consultancies, and users of SOA. In some cases, these people have brought concepts developed, not just by themselves, but by groups of people within their organizations. The input has been refined and further developed through discussion within the Working Group. The value in the result is due to the ideas and efforts of the Working Group members. The material is now published in its current form to make that value available to the wider architecture community.

Enterprise Messaging systems let programs communicate by exchanging messages, much as people communicate by exchanging email. Unlike email, enterprise messaging systems provide guaranteed delivery, speed, security, and freedom from spam. Until recently, there was no open standard for Enterprise Messaging systems, so programmers either wrote their own, or used expensive proprietary systems. AMQP Advanced Message Queuing Protocol is the first open standard for Enterprise Messaging. It is designed to support messaging for just about any distributed or business application. Routing can be configured flexibly, easily supporting common messaging paradigms like point-to-point, fanout, publish-subscribe, and request-response. Apache Qpid implements the latest AMQP specification, providing transaction management, queuing, distribution, security, management, clustering, federation and heterogeneous multi-platform support and a lot more. And Apache Qpid is extremely fast. Apache Qpid aims to be 100% AMQP Compliant.

Using a rule engine provides a framework that allows a way to externalize business logic in a common place. This will in turn empower business users and subject matter experts of the business to easily change and manage the rules. Coding such rules directly into the application makes application maintenance difficult and expensive because the rules change so often. This article goes into detail on how to architect and build a service that uses Drools to provide business decisions. This service can be part of the overall enterprise SOA infrastructure. As such, it can either be a standalone service that is consumed in a one-to-many model by all contracted consumers, or part of a composite service that provides a complex business functionality. To illustrate this point, the article shows how a service using the Drools rule engine can hide the complexity of automating mortgage underwriting decisions that a mortgage company needs to make on a daily basis.

Anvil is an Open Source Framework for creating Enterprise Portals with Flex as the Client and Java as the back end. It is being developed by Ryan Knight and Holly Edelson of Williams, James Ward of Adobe, Jon Rose of Gorilla Logic and many other great developers at Williams. We wanted Anvil to be simple to deploy in any Java environment so it uses Plain Java Objects (POJO’s), Spring and BlazeDS. This allows it to be run in any application server or servlet container. Here are some of the great features Anvil provides: 1. Single window or multi-window interface (similar to a Portal). 2. A pluggable security module which allows an enterprise to easily integrate their existing security systems into a Flex application. 3. The ability to load modules from different locations in the network for load balancing or fail-over. 4. Authorization and access control at different levels of granularity. This allows individual modules and remote services to be secured differently. 5. Common build scripts and templates to automate the building of Flex and Java. 6. A utility to auto-generating Flex code from Java. 7. A utility to auto-generate the project files for Flex Builder. 8.
