director of the Vienna branch of the Institute for Quantum Optics and Quantum Information IQOQI at the Austrian Academy of Sciences. Zeilinger has been called a pioneer in the new field of quantum information and is renowned for his realization of quantum teleportation with photons.
The aim of /r/Physics is to build a subreddit frequented by physicists, other scientists, and those with a passion for physics. Papers from physics journals (free or otherwise) are heartily encouraged. Keep posts pertinent. To encourage posting, no one is banned. Have a recent peer-reviewed paper+karma? Inform the mod for sidebar rotation.
Tevatron not dead, or so it seems. Although these days all eyes are turned to the LHC, the old Tevatron is still capable to send the HEP community into an excited state. Last Friday the D0 collaboration presented results of a measurement suggesting the standard model is not a complete description of physics in colliders. The paper is already available at this link, and it should be out on arXiv tonight.
From the article: Since the early 20th century physicists have known that light carries momentum, but the way this momentum changes as light passes through different media is much less clear. Two rival theories of the time predicted precisely the opposite effect for light incident on a dielectric: one suggesting it pushes the surface in the direction light is traveling; the other suggesting it drags the surface backwards towards the source of light. After 100 years of conflicting experimental results, a team of experimentalists from China believe they have finally found a resolution
Neil Geoffrey Turok holds the Chair of Mathematical Physics (1967) at Cambridge University. He was born in 1958 in Johannesburg, South Africa, the son of Mary and Ben Turok, activists in the anti-apartheid movement and the African National Congress.
Helen Fay Dowker is a British theoretical physicist and progressive political activist born in Manchester, England. She studied at the University of Cambridge where she completed her Ph.D. under the supervision of Stephen Hawking. Active in her criticism of the war against Iraq, she devotes much of her personal homepage to information on her political causes.
Max Tegmark (born 5 May 1967) is a Swedish-American cosmologist. Tegmark is an Associate Professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology where he belongs to the scientific directorate of the Foundational Questions Institute. Currently, he also teaches a relativity class (8.033) to undergraduates at MIT.
Last week the free and open access repository for scientific (mainly physics but also math, computer sciences...) papers arXiv got past 500,000 different papers, not counting older versions of the same article. Especially for physicists, it is the number-one resource for the latest scientific results. Most researchers publish their papers on arXiv before they are published in a 'normal' journal. A famous example is Grisha Perelman, who published his award-winning paper exclusively on arXiv.
The Commonwealth of Virginia has issued a request for contributions to an open source physics textbook (or 'flexbook' they termed it). They are partnering with CK-12 to make this educational textbook under the Creative Commons by Attribution Share-Alike license
This WikiProject exists to improve the quality of existing articles related to Physics, to create articles to cover a broader range of physics topics, and to categorize and link them in appropriate ways.
