This paper’s goal is to show that you should consider using OSS/FS when acquiring software. This paper examines market share, reliability, performance, scalability, security, and total cost of ownership. It also has sections on non-quantitative issues, unnecessary fears, OSS/FS on the desktop, usage reports, governments and OSS/FS, other sites providing related information, and ends with some conclusions. An appendix gives more background information about OSS/FS.

We invite researchers to post their papers on open source and free software here, and to add themselves to the research directory, so that our community can become steadily larger and more comprehensive.

This approach has gained both momentum and acceptance as the potential benefits have been increasingly recognized by both individuals and corporate players.[1][2]

While preceding studies relied on either a single tool or examined only a single project, like the Linux kernel, we include a mulitude of utilities, like the application Codd, which automatically examines source code to determine the author, or an online survey which obtained additional personal information never collected before. In addition to that, we examined a great variety of software projects, by accessing an online repository and including linux distributions with the highest rate of developing activity. As a result, we were able to bring an end to the most prejudices surrounding the personal background of Libre Software developers, as well as to state a very promising rank of European developers on a global scale, who are actually as numerous as their North American colleagues.

GDB, a popular open source debugger, allows a programmer to trace program execution line by line, set breakpoints, inspect variables, and look at what the program is doing at any given time. DDD is a popular GUI front end for GDB, while Eclipse provides a complete integrated development environment.
Using an assortment of real world coding errors-from simple typos to major logical blunders, The Art of Debugging with GDB, DDD, and Eclipse discusses how to manage memory, understand core dumps, and trace programming errors to their root cause. The book covers topics other debugging books omit-such as threaded, server/client, GUI, and parallel programming-as well as how to avoid common debugging pitfalls. You'll also learn about techniques and tools you can use to prevent errors, saving yourself valuable time and effort.

PyGeo is, further, an implementation of this underlying abstract framework - exposing a range of geometric objects as the building blocks for virtual, dynamic geometric constructions.
The focus is away from Euclidian geometry and metrics, and toward later geometric and mathematical developments - particularly those connected with projective geometry of real space, and the geometry of complex numbers on the plane and on the unit (Riemann) sphere.

Geomview lets you view and manipulate three-dimensional objects: you use the mouse to rotate, translate, zoom in and out, and so on. Geomview can be used as a standalone viewer for static objects or as a display engine for other programs which produce dynamically changing geometry. Geomview can display objects described in a variety of file formats. Geomview comes with a wide selection of example objects, and you can create your own objects too.

It runs on Unix-based platforms (according to users, it also compiles and runs on Mac OS X and should run on anything that Qt supports). You create a construction, such as a triangle with a circumcenter, and then, as you drag verteces of the triangle, you can see the circumcenter moving in real time. Of course, you can do a lot more than that--see the feature list below.
