Abstract

"Perhaps this is the end of the classical museum of the 19th century and the beginning of something else." (Benedicte Savoy) The opportunities offered by digital transformation allow the museum to develop into a comprehensive information space. This development is not only accompanied by processes of contextualization and decolonization, but also by increasing doubts about the äura" of the original. This raises the question of whether the collection of physical objects is an absolute necessity for the existence of the museum as a memory organization or whether human activity as a prerequisite for the existence and observation of objects should not rather be brought more into the focus of museum work. Provenance research has shown that the role of people as subjects in the spatial and temporal contexts of their activities has received too little attention in conventional museums. The modeling of the "person" (E21) as an äctor" (E39) in the "CIDOC Conceptual Reference Model" allows a systematic further development of museum documentation from a different perspective, for example in the areas of research, restoration, interpretation and exhibition. In combination with the narratives in communities of origin and traditional texts, this could become the "beginning of something else" and perpetuate the narrative of the museum as a memory organization.
