Abstract

Two Second World War research papers by Alan Turing were declassified recently. The papers, The Applications of Probability to Cryptography and its shorter companion Statistics of Repetitions, are available from from the National Archives in the UK at www.nationalarchives.gov.uk. The released papers give the full text, along with figures and tables, and provide a fascinating insight into the preparation of the manuscripts, as well as the style of writing at a time when typographical errors were corrected by hand, and mathematical expression handwritten into spaces left in the text. Working with the papers in their original format provides some challenges, so they have been typeset for easier reading and access. We recommend that the typeset versions are read with a copy of the original manuscript at hand. This document contains the text and figures The Applications of Probability to Cryptography, the companion paper is also available in typeset form from arXiv at www.arxiv.org. These notes apply to both documents.
