The first part of the report is dedicated to various problems concerning the evaluation of research in general, with reference to
the assessment exercises conducted in Italy, USA and the United Kingdom. The second part describes a classification of journals in Statistics and Demography, prepared by a commission nominated by the Societ\'a Italiana di Statistica.
