Abstract

The controversial scientific discussion an education generally contains concepts like private, public, meritorious and mixed goods, human capital, cultural as well as social capital. Making reference to these concepts helps to justify normative ideas of arranging education. The representation and social analysis of the underlying financial-scientific and politico-cconomical theories shows the limits but also the chances of this foundation. What is demonstrated is the fact that, at first glance, referring to concepts of goods and capital does not have any effect an the normative orientations for education if one does not go beyond the limits of economical questions. From the point of social ethics, however, the concepts can be interpreted as a specific access reflecting the relationship between subject and society/community. Thus, the concept of human capital represents an Interface between educational economics and social ethics which contributes to giving the project of social ethics of education a more distinctive image.
