In journalism research the past twenty years have seen a trend toward study of the communication process in its relation to society. Methodologically, increasing use has been made of the quantitative methods of the behavioral sciences, but by no means to the exclusion of the qualitative approach of the humanities. Rapid progress has been sparked by the growing availability of basic data, the development of research tools, and increasing institutional support for field research.
