Abstract

Accelerated growth of the Web has made difficult retrieving information although the current search engines algorithms implemented are very sophisticated. This paper proposes a methodology that makes use of Semantic Web technologies to build search engine for a given context. The Semantic Web is made of a set of technologies, tools and standards that form the basis of an infrastructure to support the vision of a Web associated with meaning. The proposed methodology was test in commercial contexts that provide some kind of product or service, such as restaurants and hotels. The information, which is used as a starting point, is extracted from a Web site with thematic information or directory, from which the selected ontology is populated, this being built from scratch or by adapting some already existing ontology, creating a semantic database; finally, a search application that searches and displays the information found with the specific criteria. The results show that a search engine that uses Semantic Web technologies can achieve good results compared with traditional search engines.
