A reagent consisting of anthrone dissolved in concentrated sulphuric acid has been found to develop characteristic fluorescence colours in filtered ultra-violet light when heated with low concentration of a number of organic compounds. Glycerol and glycol derivatives are especially reactive, and so is tartaric acid. The reaction has the delicacy of a micro test and several instances of its use for identification of specific compounds in industrial forensic and foodstuff investigations are given.
