Abstract

This paper proposes a compound image compression method named United Coding (UC). In this coding method, several lossless coding techniques such as run-length encoding (RLE), Portable Network Graphics (PNG) and gzip are combined into H.264 hybrid coding, and macroblock is the basic coding unit. All coders in UC are used to code each macroblock, and rate-distortion (R-D) optimization criterion is applied to select the optimum coder. Experimental results show that compared to H.264, UC achieves 2dB~34dB PSNR improvement and better visual image quality for compound image with mixed text, graphics and picture. Moreover, UC also has a partial-lossless (defined as partially lossless and partially near-lossless) compression performance
