Abstract

Conductors for overhead transmission lines have previously been subjected to ~· fatigue tests under the action of flexural vibrations on stringing sheaves. These fatigue tests are described in our Laboratory Report No. 72E.73, where their results represented in terms of the number of load cycles are plotted against the amplitude of vibration of the conductor. The magnitude of the dynamic bending stresses which occurred in this connection has now been measured by means of strain gauges. The results of these measurements have been combined with those obtained from the above-mentioned fatigue tests, and ,. also compared with results from earlier fatigue tests which were made under the action of pulsating axial loads. The results of all these tests are closely in agreement with each other.
