Abstract

This paper covers some examples of the STRI and NGK experience in 1000 h salt fog tests according to IEC 1109 for line insulators 1 and some IEC drafts for arresters and hollow insulators 2, 3. A critical review of recent results shows that the test may behave as a pure pollution test, not as an ageing test. Some test parameters, test object specifications and test criteria are doubtfully specified, questionable, or not specified at all in the 1000 h salt fog test. The specifications of different IEC ageing tests procedures (e.g. for line, post, hollow insulators and arresters) are different, although the aim of the tests is similar. Therefore, a common standard for ageing tests, applicable on all types of composite insulators is desirable. Suggestions for the improvement of the test method are presented.
