Abstract

This study presents results on the characterization of the ovarian development during reproductive cycle of the giant freshwater prawn, Macrobrachium rosenbergii. The ovary has been classified into different stages, based on the external morphological characters such as colour and size and histological variables. The results showed the existence of a directly proportional relationship between ovarian stages and the gonadosomatic index, oocyte diameter and the characteristic of ovarian histology. It is also observed that the total lipid (TL) and triglycerides (TGS) increased in the hepatopancreas and ovary from stage I to IV. However, the free fatty acids (FFA) and lipase activity (LA) decreased in the hepatopancreas and ovary from stage I to IV. By using ELISA the ovarian vitellogenin (vitellin) was quantified in each stage of ovary during reproductive cycle of the freshwater prawn.
