Abstract
Objective: Estimates for the number of childhood attention-deficit/hyperactiviy disorder (ADHD) cases that persist into adulthood range from 50% to 80%. Little is known about how ADHD symptoms and associated functional impairments impact quality of life (QoL) in these adults.
Method: Data were collected from experts, patients, and published literature to determine the links between ADHD symptoms, functional impairments, and QoL.
Results: Data indicated that there is a negative impact of core ADHD symptoms across multiple areas of functioning. Furthermore, there is a synergistic interaction between symptoms and associated impairments, creating impairment pathways that have a cascading impact such that ADHD is not just a mental health condition but a way of life. Key QoL domains paramount for these adults (ie, productivity, health, relationships) were identified and a conceptual model of the impact of adult ADHD developed. Based on this model, an ADHD disease-specific QoL measure (the Adult ADHD QoL scale) was generated.
Conclusion: This model and measure will allow clinicians and researchers to better assess the impact of ADHD and facilitate broader treatment plans that address QoL issues as well as symptoms. As a result, adults with ADHD will be better able to manage their disorder and enhance their everyday functioning.
