Zusammenfassung
Cancer is a strongly interacting, extended system, whose modeling requires a careful treatment of the geometry of the tumor and its environment. In particular, the design of a successful therapy rests upon a proper understanding of the relevant cell processes and of their interaction with the therapeutic agents. We will present the results of our simulational work with cancer cell subspecies, whose competitive dynamics is closely related to the development of acquired resistance to a cytotoxic drug. We will also describe a model for immunotherapy, which considers the effects of spatial heterogeneity, including lymphocyte migration towards the tumor and the pinning of tumor growth by immune cells.
