The Appropriateness of Assistive Devices for People with Physical Disability

Zusammenfassung

It appears to be one of the unique tasks of the OT to provide persons with physical disability with assistive devices to compensate for their lack of personal independence in one way or another. Many assistive devices are commercially available while others have to be custom made. The need for assistive devices has to be assessed and the selection of an appropriate device is part of the process to ensure effective and continual use by the person with disability. In the OT department at Medunsa a research project was undertaken to investigate the effectiveness and use of assistive devices appropriate for persons with physical disability who were living in a developing area called Soshanguve. The results of the project are published in this article.
