Investigation of University Industry Technology Transfer Case: A Conceptual and Methodological Approach

.
(2005)

Abstract

Understanding the nature and process of technology transfer from university to industry is complicated by the variety of mechanisms through which technology can move from producers to users. Therefore the aim of this paper is to develop a conceptual and methodological framework as to analyze different university industry technology transfer (UITT or industrializing university knowledge) cases at Lund University. Although there are plenty of technology transfer mechanisms, in this project we focus on patenting, licensing, and start-up company formation. The main unit of analysis is the research projects conducted at Lund University. Using a set of UITT projects, we expect to identify the nature of the process of UITT either as technology transfer or technology co-development. Technology transfer is the use by a party external to the project of the technology or technical information outputs. Technology co-development is the use by contractors, subcontractors, or co-sponsors participating in the project. The understanding of the nature of UITT (or industrializing university knowledge) will help us to identify the determinants and characteristics of these processes. The results of this project are important for making technology transfer policies for universities.
