Library Philosophy & Practice, 11 (2): 1 - 15 (2009)

Abstract

The article discusses the field of information studies and the sociological approaches regarding how the field is applied in the information professions of library and information studies and librarianship. The relationship between theory and practice are considered through the philosophy of the social sciences including the representation and status of a discipline and the issues and their definitions to be studied by that discipline. The utility of theorizing and the cognitive view of information science are noted. Several sociologists' theories including Joseph Fichter, Ian Cornelius, and Nico Stehr regarding theorizing in library and information science are discussed.
