Abstract
The purpose of this study was to explore differences between objective and subjective intergenerational social mobility (ISM). The present study focused on the relationship between nation-level social inequality and pessimistic perception of ISM, which has been overlooked in the existing social stratification literature. Using data from Social Inequality Module in 2009 International Social Survey Program, we conducted multilevel logistic regression analysis to address the binary outcome as well as controlling for both individual- and country-level variables. We found a positively significant effect of a relative ratio (measured by dividing average earnings of the highest class by the lowest class) on pessimistic perception of ISM. It indicated that increasing social inequality may lead to more pessimistic view on upward ISM. Implications for social policy and the welfare state were discussed.
