Abstract

This paper presents the current literature about utilities service experience with polymeric insulators, who have similar environmental conditions as the one prevailing in the Gulf Council Countries (GCC). The polymeric insulators provided very satisfactory performance in many areas of the world, especially to combat high pollution conditions, which is a min concem for the reliability of the HV transmission network in the Gulf. The GCC service experience with polymeric insulator is still limited with respect to period of utilization. Other countries service experience can provide additional informing experience with polymeric insulators. Laboratory tests and inservice inspection are very important for careful selection of the suitable insulator types. The main objective of this paper is to present a thorough literature review and investigations of local and international electric utility's experiences with polymeric insulators. The paper will also present the major procedure needed to assess the performance of such insulators in the GCC area.
