Abstract

Gapless a"esters using zinc oxide blocks of high stability are characterized by their maximum pennissible · continuous operating voltage. It is possible to use an a"ester with this voltage equal to 61 percent of the maximum system voltage for applications in effectively earthed systems. Such an a"ester can withstand temporary overvoltages of 1.5 p.u. for one second, while limiting switching surges to 1.85 p.u. and lightning surges to 2.2. p.u .. The high energy absorption capability, the speed of response of these a"esters, as demonstrated by several tests, fulfill the most stringent requirements.
