Zusammenfassung
This book addresses the reconstruction of the early- and mid-Holocene environments of the Eastern Sahara based on botanical, geoscientific and archaeozoological approaches. It covers the vegetation history by the identification of radiocarbon-dated charcoal, palaeoclimatic investigations of the deposits of temporary lakes (playas) in the Gilf Kebir Plateau, and an interpretative analysis of the faunal remains found in archaeological excavations. The book is abundantly illustrated with comprehensive bilingual figure captions and provides solid insights into past living conditions of Western Egypt and northwest Sudan – today some of the driest regions on earth. Contents: Katharina Neumann: Vegetationsgeschichte der Ostsahara im Holozän Stefan Kröpelin: Untersuchungen zum Sedimentationsmilieu von Playas im Gilf Kebir (Südwest-Ägypten) Wim Van Neer & Hans-Peter Uerpmann: Palaeoecological Significance of the Holocene Faunal Remains of the B.O.S.-Missions.
