A SUMMARY OF LIGHTNING PARAMETERS FOR ENGINEERING APPLICATIONS

, and .
(1980)

Abstract

A comprehensive review of previously published data on various lightning parameters is contained in a recent Electra article I and after discussion at the Study Committee 33 Colloquium held in Neptun, Roumania, in June 1979, it was agreed that the conclusions with regard to each parameter should be summarised; thus presenting proposals as to the parameters to be used for application to engineering designs concerned with lightning protection or per ormance. This report thus covers firstly the subject of the parameters of incidence, such as lightning ground flash density, its relation ot the keraunic level, the polarity of lightning and multiple stroke incidence and characteristics. Secondly, the frequency distribution of the magnitudes of lightning cu"ents is reviewed in the light of the· effect of tall structures giving rise to upward discharges which increase substantially with structure heights above 60 m and a revised distribution is proposed which suggests a "shielding" cu"ent regime, as distinct from a "backflash" cu"ent regime, for practical calculation . Thereafter, the report summarises new impulse shape characteristics of lightning cu"ents based upon a digjtaL analysis of Berger.s data, giving front times and steepness (rates of rise of cu"ent) using a number of currently accepted definitions and covering both first and subsequent strokes of lightning, and co"elations between the latter and cu"ent maxima are discussed. The effect of structure heights is examined and a new expression is proposed for the incidence of lightning which takes into account observed data. New concepts on the striking distances of lightning and the attractive range to structures are also briefly mentioned.
