STRUCTURAL DAMPING OF STRANDED CABLE

Abstract

Frictional losses during one cycle of bending of a multi-strand cable with one end free and the other clamped are considered. A quasi-static approach is used which is based on the assumption that inertia forces affect neither the contact pressure between the strands nor the coefficient of friction. Expressions defining boundaries of slipping sections and angles of slippages are derived. The overall frictional losses in the cable are found by integration over all the slipping sections. It is shown that the deflection of a cantilever cable is smaller when an internal friction is taken into consideration. A simple formula for the lost displacement is given in the case of high internal friction.
