JabRef Plugin - installation

Caution: Since JabRef version 2.12, plugins are no longer supported in JabRef. So in newer versions the BibSonomy plugin is no longer working.

JabRef is an open source bibliography reference manager based on BibTeX format. JabRef can be connencted with BibSonomy by using a plugin that allows you to access your publications from BibSonomy directly in JabRef.

General information

JabRef is an open source bibliography reference manager based on the BibTeX-format (like BibSonomy). Starting with version 2.4b1, JabRef can be extended using a plugin system based on the Java Plugin Framework (JPF). We have now built a BibSonomy plugin for JabRef that allows a user to directly access their publications from BibSonomy.
This plugin enables you to:

• Fetch publication entries directly from BibSonomy,
• Upload publications into your personal account on BibSonomy,
• Delete entries from your collection.

For example, you can do the following:

• Download your complete BibSonomy collection into JabRef, use its built-in bibtex-key generator to unify the bibtex keys of your publicatons, and upload all entries again.
• Download your complete BibSonomy collection into JabRef, perform integrity checks on it (missing fields, etc), and upload all entries again.
• Use JabRef's web search facility to import entries (e.g, from PubMed), edit them locally to your needs, and bulk-upload them to BibSonomy.

All of the above integrates seamlessly into the usual workflow of JabRef - this means you don't have to visit the BibSonomy web interface during the whole process.

Installation

In order to use the plugin, you need a BibSonomy useraccount.
Just follow these simple steps to experience the synergies of JabRef and BibSonomy:

1. Download JabRef
   To use the BibSonomy plugin, you need an older version of JabRef. You can find one on this page: http://www.oldfoss.com/JabRef.html
   Choose a version that is older than 2.12, for example 2.10:
   
   Download the suitable file for your operating system and execute it. JabRef will then be installed.

2. Download the BibSonomy plugin
   You can download the plugin here: https://gforge.cs.uni-kassel.de/frs/download.php/76/jabref-bibsonomy-plugin-2.5.2-bin.jar

3. Move the plugin jar file
   Put the plugin jar file into a subfolder called Plugins in your JabRef installation directory.

4. Start JabRef
   Start JabRef and you can start working with the Plugin!

Configuration

Before you can start working with the plugin, you have to enter your BibSonomy username and your API key. Do the following steps:

1. Create a new database
   Open JabRef and create a new database first. To do so, click on File and then on New database.

2. Open the plugin settings
   In the menu, click on Plugins, then on BibSonomy and finally on Settings.

   

3. Enter your data
   Enter your BibSonomy username and your API key. You can find your API key on the settings page in the tab "settings". To store the API key, select the checkbox Store API key. You can select all the other fields as you wish. Save your data by clicking on Save.
