      Commercial growth media were evaluated for their effect on tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum L.) seedling emergence, growth and development in 80% net shade house at Botswana University of Agriculture and Natural Resources from March-April 2015. Three locally available commercial growth media (germination mix, cocopeat and hygromix) were used. A completely randomized design (CRD) with four repetitions was used. Tomato seeds were sown on 200 cells styrofoam seedling trays to evaluate seedling emergence. Thereafter, the following growth and development parameter were measured; leaf number and area, plant height, fresh and dry masses. Data was subjected to analysis of variance (ANOVA). Results revealed no significant differences (p>0.05) in seedling emergence among the three growing media for the entire study period. However, hygromix gave superior absolute numbers compared to other two growth media. Hygromix also gave significantly (p<0.01) larger leaves and taller seedlings than germination mix and cocopeat whereas, no significant difference was observed on shoot fresh and dry masses. Growing media had no significant influence on seedling emergence rate although hygromix sown seeds still emerged relatively faster than the other media. Growers must pay attention to details when selecting the medium to use. Therefore, hygromix and to some extent germination mix are recommended as the most desirable growing media for raising tomato seedlings.

      Two field experiments were conducted in 2013 and 2014 growing seasons at the experimental farm of the Faculty of Agriculture, Cairo University, Giza, Egypt. Twenty Egyptian cotton genotypes were evaluated in a randomized complete blocks design with three replications for six traits. The aim of this study was to determine the relationships between seed cotton yield and yield components and to show efficiency of components on seed cotton yield by using different statistical procedures. Data of seed cotton yield and yield components over the two years in the study were evaluated by statistical procedures; correlation and regression analysis, path coefficient analysis, stepwise multiple linear regression and factor analysis. Differences among all the traits were statistically highly significant. Seed cotton yield plant-1 was significantly and positively correlated with number of bolls plant-1 (r = 0.85**), boll weight (r = 0.68**), seed index (r = 0.91**) and lint percentage (r = 0.70**). Regression analysis by using step-wise method revealed that 96.51 percent of total variation exist in seed cotton yield accounted for by traits entered to regression model namely; number of bolls plant-1, boll weight and lint percentage. The path analysis indicated high positive direct effect of number of bolls plant-1 (0.57), boll weight (0.39) and lint percentage had moderate positive direct effect (0.24) on seed cotton yield plant-1. Factor analysis indicated that three factors could explain approximately 73.96% of the total variation. The first factor which accounted for about 53.21% of the variation was strongly associated with number of bolls plant-1, boll weight, seed index and lint percentage, whereas the second factor was strongly associated and positive effects on earliness index only, which accounts for about 20.75% of the variation. Stepwise multiple regression and path analysis techniques were more efficient than other used statistical techniques. Based on the five of statistical analysis techniques, agreed upon that high seed cotton yield of Egyptian cotton could be obtained by selecting breeding materials with high number of bolls plant-1 , boll weight and lint percentage.

      Field experiment was conducted during 2013/2014 and 2015 seasons was aimed to evaluate productivity of Rhodes and Blue panic grasses as well as Alfalfa under sprinkler irrigation with foliar application of potassium nitrate that enable plants to cope with water stress. Each two forage grasses beside alfalfa were conducted in separate experiments. Irrigation every 10 days surpassed in total chlorophyll, leaf area, plant height, number of stems/m2, forage green yield/fed and forage dry matter yield/fed than those irrigated every 20 days. Highest percentages of water use efficiency, crude fiber and nitrogen free extract as well as yield/fed of crude protein, crude fiber, ether extract, ash and nitrogen free extract were produced from irrigation every 7 days. However, highest percentages of crude protein, ether extract and ash were produced from irrigation every 14 days. Forage species significantly differed on total chlorophyll, leaf area/plant, plant height, average of number of stem/cm2, forage green yield/fed and forage dry matter yield/fed. A significant effect due to forage species on percentages of water use efficiency, crude protein and fiber, extracting ether, ash and nitrogen free extract and nitrogen free extract as well as crude fiber, extracting ether, ash and nitrogen free extract yield/fed. Sown Rhodes grass produced maximum forage green and forage dry matter yield/fed and its quality compared with other studied forage crops. Foliar spraying of potassium nitrate at 15 ppm significantly increased total chlorophyll, leaf area, plant height, number of stems/m2, forage green and forage dry matter yield/fed. The results showed that highest percentages of water use efficiency, crude protein, crude fiber and ether extract, and nitrogen free extract and nitrogen free extract as well as crude fiber, extracting ether, ash and nitrogen free extract yield/fed. It could be stated that irrigation every 10 days and sown Rhodes grass and foliar spraying of potassium nitrate at 15 ppm maximized forage green and forage dry matter yield/fed.

      A procedure for the regeneration of melon (Cucumis melo L.) cv. Maazoun and Beji via shoot organogenesis from cotyledon explants is described. Cotyledons explants cultivated on the basal Murashige and Skoog (1962) medium, added with combinations of BAP, NAA and 2,4-D developed adventitious shoots after two weeks. The rates of caulogenesis varied according to the medium hormonal composition and the genotype. The best induction medium for a morphogenic response was MS containing 0.5 mgl-1 NAA and 2 mgl-1 BAP. The highest caulogenesis percentages were 79.16% and 58.33% for Maazoun and Beji cultivars respectively. The mean number of buds per callus was 2.92. Development phases were characterized by histological studies. Some phases of shoot organogenesis were observed in Cucumis melo L. Maazoun and Beji cultivars.The shoots were rooted in MS medium without growth regulators or added NAA (0.5 or 1 mgl-1). The highest bud rooting of buds occurred on MS medium added with 1 mg/l NAA. The percentage of rooting varied from 16.66 to 75%. The highest percentage of survival plants after acclimatization were 41.73 and 57.63 for Beji and Maazoun respectively

      Pollution of aquatic ecosystems can be ascertained through the organisms residing in it. Biochemical changes in fish reflect the type of degradation occurring in living systems under the influence of any toxicant. Naphthalene is easily absorbed and distributed inside the body and is metabolized mainly by liver. Anabas testudineus was used as toxicity test organism to analyze various forms of damage. Basic water quality indices were checked before designing the bioassay test. Lethal concentration Of Naphthalene which killed 50% of Test animals (LC50) was determined after exposing the fish to varying concentrations for a period of 96 hours. The test specimen selected had average weight of 2-5gm and was procured from Central Institute of Freshwater Aquaculture (CIFA). After exposure to Naphthalene, the test organism showed major changes in the glycogen content, acetylcholine esterase, protein and adenosine triphosphate with increase in toxicant concentration. Constant decrease in the biochemical parameters indicates stress condition of Anabas testudineus.

      The implementation of sustainable agricultural practices, which allow for more efficient utilization of natural resources, as well as reduced pollutant emissions, has become an imperative. Given this context, different cultivation solutions, such as hydroponic methods and alternative fertilizer sources, should be considered. This study evaluated the potential of phytoplankton, Gephyrocapsa oceanica, as a substitute for secondary macronutrients and micronutrients.. Lettuce plants (Lactuca sativa L. var. capitata) were grown in a non-circulating hydroponic system in order to test different nutrient solutions. We assessed four different growing media containing: distilled water without added nutrients, distilled water enriched exclusively with nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, distilled water enriched with nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, and Gephyrocapsa oceanica extract, and distilled water enriched with traditional inorganic fertilizers. Growth parameters of the treated lettuce, such as the fresh and dry weight of the shoot and roots, head diameter, root length, leaf area, and specific leaf area were determined. Additionally, we evaluated plant composition in terms of micronutrient profile (Ca, Mg, Fe, Mn, Zn) and crude protein and fiber production (neutral detergent fiber NDF, acid detergent fiber ADF, acid detergent lignin ADL, cellulose, hemicellulose). Lettuce plants grown with Gephyrocapsa oceanica extract presented complete development and agronomic parameters, comparable to those of plants cultivated using the conventional nutrient solution. With emphasis to all the parameters, phytoplankton extract result to be suitable for use in hydroponic cultivation and may serve as a promising tool in sustainable agriculture.

      Mango is an important fruit hence plays an important role in the economy of Pakistan via export. Mango can suffer from serious losses by mango pre and post-harvest diseases. Environmental factors i.e. temperature, rainfall, and humidity have serious effect on the onset of these diseases. Mango pre harvest diseases included mango malformation, blossom blight, anthracnose and twig blight. Mongo post-harvest diseases include anthracnose, stem end rot, Aspergillus rot and Alternaria rot. A survey has been conducted in 37 orchards i.e. Muzafargarh (15), Multan (12) and Khaniwal (10) for the assessment of mango pre- harvest diseases by using severity scale of 1-5. Post-harvest disease assessment was done on collected mango fruits of respective study areas. Objective of the present study is to assess prevalence, incidence and severity of pre and post-harvest mango diseases with respect to prevalent environmental conditions in study area. Samples for pre and post-harvest diseases were collected from three study sites for the sake of causal fungal isolation. All pre and post-harvest diseases were present in all three study areas. Pre harvest disease incidence was lied in the range of 0-100%, 80-100%, 40-100%, 0-100% for blossom blight, anthracnose, mango malformation and twig blight respectively. Mango post-harvest disease incidence was found in range of 40-90%, 16-86.6%, 16-76.6% and 3.33-53.3% for anthracnose, stem end rot, Alternaria rot and Aspergillus rot respectively.

      The present study was conducted in the University of Agriculture, Peshawar, Pakistan research farm to investigate the effectiveness of various levels of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) fertilizers and irrigation (I) on growth and yield components of maize crop (Zea mays L.) as well as total P and N. The experiment was laid out in Split block design replicated three times. The experiment comprised of two main plots where two levels of irrigations were applied i.e. irrigation at the same day of sowing field capacity (FC) 50-60 % (I1) and irrigations after five days of sowing (FC) 20- 30 % (I2). While in the subplots Nitrogen (N) using urea and Phosphorus (P2O5) using single super phosphate were applied in the following combination i.e. 0:0, 50:0, 50:60, 50:90, 100:0, 100:60, 100:90, 150:0, 150:60, 150:90. The results showed that the treatments combinations N3P3, I1N3 and I1P3 yielded maximum plant height, weight of grains ear-1, and grain yield. The total P and N concentration in plant leaves were also highest at the interactions N3P3, I1N3, and I1P3. It is concluded that application of irrigation on same day after NP fertilizers 150 and 90 kg ha-1 is much better than other treatments. These results suggest that irrigation move added urea and SSP from the surface layer to sub soil layers where it is likely to make good contact with plant roots.

      Generation of Solid wastes in general and biodegradable waste in particular is increasing at house hold level over the last two decades. Per capita generation of the waste has been increasing steadily due to population growth and changing socio-economic characteristics and cultural habits and varies from 250g to 600g. Any material which can be decomposable by the action of microorganisms in a short period of time is called biodegradable Mostly food waste; vegetable peels and fruit pulp are biodegradable. These materials readily mix with the soil by the action of bacteria. During decomposition, these materials release carbon dioxide, methane, ammonia and hydrogen sulphide into the environment thereby contributes to air pollution and odour pollution. The gases that are released during the decay of biodegradable wastes can be captured for the economic utility and as well as to save the environment. An attempt is being made in this technical research paper to demonstrate the possibilities energy recovery from biodegradable kitchen waste that is collected from residential societies which can be utilized for the benefits of the society. Kitchen and food waste collected from a high end residential community of 300 families in Mumbai city suburbs is analyzed for the quantification of bio gas. Bio gas is captured through a fabricated anaerobic digester. Experimentation and results are discussed. The results are encouraging.

      Drought is a wide spread problem seriously influencing rapeseed (Brassica napus L.) production, mostly in dryland regions. To investigate the effects of water deficit on some canola (Brassica napus L.) genotypes. Four drought treatments i.e. 4800m3/ha, 3840m3/ha, 2880 m3/ha and 1920 m3/ha on yield and yield components of six canola genotypes i.e. Serw 4, Serw 10, Pactol, Line 51. Two field experiments were conducted during 2014/2015 and 2015/2016seasons. Results revealed that irrigation using 3840 m3/ha at four times came in the second rank for all studied parameters It increased above aforementioned traits using 1920 m3/ha as two times by 9.4, 26.2, 40.5, 45.6, 46.0,54.4, 20.5, 25.8 and 58.3%, respectively comparing by irrigation using 1920 m3/ha in two times as average of both seasons. Whereas, sown Serw 4 cultivar surpassed Serw 10 cultivar in plant height, No. of branches/plant, No. of silica/plant, seed weight/plant, seed, oil and protein yield/ha by 3.0, 21.8, 30, 21.6, 33.9, 26.7 and 37.9%, respectively as average in both seasons. It could be recommended that irrigation five times by 4800 m3/ha of Serw 4 cultivar significantly maximized seed, oil protein yield/ha.

      The use of plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) to control disastrous diseases in many crops has been considered important recently. The research was conducted to evaluate several bacterial strains to control white rust in chrysanthemum. The research consisted of two chronological experiments, in vitro and in vivo testing of bacterial isolate against the disease. 16 bacteria isolates were collected, purified and applied on the rust-infected leaf. Three isolates showed more effective in suppressing white rust during in vitro testing and further identification confirmed these strains, Pf Kr 2, Pf Smd 2 and Pf Ktl were grouped into P. flourescens. In vivo testing of the Pf isolates also revealed consistent performances of these three Pf isolates in retarding the growth of fungal Puccinia horiana and even more effective than Azotobacter sp. and Azospirilium sp. The production of ethylene on the leaf was coincidence with the slower development and lower disease intensity on the treated plants. Among the three strains, Pf Kr 2 showed stronger suppression to the disease. Further investigations are needed to further elucidate the existence of specific interrelation between Pf strains and plant genotypes or cultivars. Prior to a selection of good bacterial inoculants, it is recommended to select cultivars that benefit from association with these bacteria.

      The environmental stresses are most common in Algeria. Drought, cold and hot weather are often present. These production constraints are abiotic, they are combined together more aggravating the loss in crop yields, especially durum. Indeed, a study was conducted under different agro-ecological conditions in the 2010/11 year. The approach adopted has been characterized by integration across experiment and pedoclimatic zoned. To do this, tests were conducted at the three zones and followed up from the installation the plant to harvest. The observations concern the effects of environmental constraints on yield and traits associated; with measurements, it is focused on morpho-phenological characteristics of the vegetation, soil moisture and physicochemical properties of the soil. A substantial variation in yield were observed between zones can be explained by the significance soil tillage, crop rotation the characteristics of each zone. Results confirm particularly that correlations between yield and associated characters exist and that various genotypes respond differently with the environments. Improved genotypes and precocious ensure the best yield. The early stage of heading is a trait often sought in Mediterranean areas, since it allows them to avoid the terminal water deficit or deficiency. The study confirmed the existence of significant correlations entered yield and it is components of and that genotypes responded differently depending on the environment to which they are subjected.
