    Phytoremediation potential of an ornamental plant, Vinca (Vinca rosea) was assessed for Lead- contaminated soil. Plants were grown in pots having soils with different levels of Pb contamination i.e. T1 (10 ppm), T2 (20 ppm), T3 (30 ppm), T4 (40 ppm), T5 (50 ppm), T6 (60 ppm), T7 (70 ppm), T8 (80 ppm) and T9 (90 ppm). Plants were also grown in pots with uncontaminated soil as control treatment (T0). After pot study (6 weeks), plants were harvested to measure different physical parameters and prepare plant samples for chemical analysis. Representative soil samples were collected from the pots for chemical analysis. Atomic absorption spectrophotometer (AAS) was used to measure concentration of Lead in plants and soil. The results indicated that plants were healthier and taller in lower Pb-concentration. The plant height and fresh weight decreased in higher contamination levels. The average uptake of Lead in Vinca increased with increased level of contamination. The remediation potential was higher than 1 in lower contamination level. While in higher contamination level it was low. It is concluded that Vinca plant can be used for extraction of Pb from less contaminated soil due to its aesthetic beauty and phytoremediation potential.

    The study was conducted to analyze the extent of heavy metals contamination and bacteriological content in the sediments of Lahore Branch Canal. The main purpose of digging this canal was that the areas of Lahore and Kasur could be irrigated for the means of agriculture. Due to improper drainage systems of industrial sectors and residential areas the level of pollution is increasing in the canal. Sediment samples were collected from three sites located at the canal intersections namely Thokar Niaz Baig, Punjab University New Campus and Dharampura during the canal closure period in 2014 and 2015. The samples were analyzed for heavy metals (Cadmium, Chromium, Copper, Cobalt, Zinc and Iron) by using Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy and the bacteriological content (Total coliform) was analyzed by pour plate method. The metals Zinc, Chromium, Copper and Cobalt were detected in minute concentration. Only the concentration of iron was higher than the recommended limit. According to the Codex Alimentarius standards, all the sediments samples were in safe limits. The Total coliform concentrations for the areas Thokar Niaz Baig, Punjab University and Dharampura were 2500, 5000 and 6000 colonies in year 2014 respectively. In 2015 the colonies of total coliform were found to be 1100, 4130 and 6400 in the same areas respectively. When these sediments are used for agricultural purposes the deposited metals present in them pose harm to the crops. When crops are eaten by human, the metals ultimately get transferred to human.

    Among organic amendments, compost is well known for its effectiveness on agricultural productivity increase but little is diffused about vermicompost efficacy. The present study aimed to evaluate the benefits of vermicompost from animal wastes on Lagenaria siceraria productivity and its seeds quality compared to compost. Thus, a field experiment was carried out under randomized complete block design with three replicates in Côte d’Ivoire by using compost and vermicompost as fertilizers. The agronomic parameters as “time of fruits maturity, number of fruits per plant, weigh of fruit, yield and heavy metal contents in the seeds were evaluated. For a same type of waste, shorter time to maturity, larger number of fruits per plant, larger number of seeds per fruit, heavier fruits and seeds and higher yields were obtained with vermicompost compared to compost. Heavy metals contents in seeds from vermicomposts were lower than those from composts with the same type of waste. Contents of heavy metals in the seeds from plots that received vermicomposts were all below the maximum residue limits recommended by the Codex Alimentarius. Our results indicated that vermicompost improved more the yield of L. siceraria and its seeds quality compared to compost, and hence could be recommended to peasants rather than compost.
