Die zur Stiftung Preußischer Kulturbesitz gehörende Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin hat zum ersten Mal in großer Tiefe und Breite das im NS-Staat aufgebaute Netzwerk zur Beschaffung von Literatur und deren Verteilung an deutsche Bibliotheken untersucht. Dieses Netzwerk verteilte große Mengen an Büchern, die bei so genannten Reichsfeinden und jüdischen Verfolgten beschlagnahmt worden waren, an wissenschaftliche Bibliotheken oder andere Einrichtungen in Deutschland und Österreich. Um die Rolle der Preußischen Staatsbibliothek (heute Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin - Preußischer Kulturbesitz) und der dort bis 1945 angesiedelten Reichstauschstelle aufzuklären, wurden in neun Archiven umfangreiche Akten studiert – dabei waren auch Erwerbungsakten der Preußischen Staatsbibliothek, welche sich kriegsbedingt in Jelenia Gora (früher Hirschberg) befinden. Insgesamt lässt die Aktenlage, die aufgrund von Kriegsereignissen lückenhaft ist, nicht zu, den Umfang der fraglichen Bestände zuverlässig anzugeben.
Die Niedersächsische Staats- und Universitätsbibliothek Göttingen (SUB) hat dem SPD-Ortsverein Verden 167 Bücher übergeben, die während der Zeit des Nationalsozialismus in den Bestand der Bibliothek aufgenommen worden waren: Die Bücher, die den Besitzstempel der „Arbeiter-Zentralbibliothek Verden“ tragen, waren 1935 vom Bürgermeisteramt Verden als „Geschenk“ an die Göttinger Bibliothek geschickt worden.
Die Geschichte der 1938 beschlagnahmten Privatbibliothek der jüdischen Industriellenfamilie Petschek ist ein eindrückliches Beispiel für die langen und verschlungenen Wege, auf denen NS-Raubgut in die Bestände deutscher Bibliotheken gelangte – auch in die SUB Hamburg.
Es ist eine einzigartige Sammlung, die von der Verfolgung der Juden im Nationalsozialismus zeugt: 10 000 Bücher lagern in der Stadtbibliothek Nürnberg, die Juden geraubt worden waren. Die Stadt bemüht sich nicht nur darum, die Identität der Vorbesitzer zu klären, sondern will auch den Nachfahren die Schriften zurückgeben.
Seit 2004 beschäftigt sich ein Forschungsprojekt an der Universitätsbibliothek Wien mit unrechtmäßig erworbenen Bücherbeständen während der NS-Zeit. Noch immer finden sich geraubte Bücher in Beständen wissenschaftlicher Bibliotheken in ganz Österreich. Doch die Frage nach Rückerstattung ist oft nicht leicht zu klären.

Einst stand das Buch "Analytische Psychologie und Erziehung" im Regal der Jüdin Marie May Reiss - bis ihr Besitz in die Hände der Nazis fiel und das Werk in der Hamburger Staats- und Universitätsbibliothek landete. Millionen Bücher gelangten in der NS-Zeit unrechtmäßig an Bibliotheken. Auch die "Stabi" profitierte von den Beutezügen. Nun ist dort die Ausstellung "Geraubte Bücher" zu sehen.
MAINZ (dpa) Das hebräische Buch ist knapp 250 Jahre alt und handelt von der Kabbala – der Mystik des jüdischen Glaubens. Sorgsam legt Andreas Lehnardt das in Leder gebundene Werk auf seinen Schreibtisch. „Sehen Sie diese handschriftlichen Einträge und Kommentare – sie sind neben dem Buchtext für die Wissenschaft besonders interessant“, erklärt der Mainzer Judaistik-Professor. Seit rund vier Jahren arbeitet er an der Johannes Gutenberg-Universität und kümmert sich intensiv um rund 5.500 Bücher, die von zwei jüdischen Gemeinden stammen und wie durch ein Wunder den Zweiten Weltkrieg überstanden haben.
Wie die Uni Köln in der NS-Zeit an eine Smmlung gelangte, zeigt die Ausstellung „Bücherspuren“. Sie dokumentiert eindrucksvoll den Weg einer privaten Bücherei von Wien nach Köln - das Ergebnis einer Herkunftsforschung.
Systematisch plünderten die Nazis die Bibliotheken von "Reichsfeinden" im In- und Ausland. Deutsche Bibliothekare bedienten sich gerne und horteten hunderttausende geraubter Bücher.
