This article considers to what extent a person with dementia can maintain their sense of self and identity following diagnosis of dementia. The authors discuss identity in the context of dementia and illustrate this through the use of a hypothesised case study of a woman with a diagnosis of dementia. Theories and approaches that recognise and maintain identity and presentation of self, within the context of dress and accessories, and interactions with others, are discussed.
