"Wir machen aus dem Mittelmeer einen Friedhof". Mit diesen Worten hat Maltas Premier ein Umdenken in der EU-Flüchtlingspolitik gefordert. 34 Menschen starben bei dem neuen Bootsunglück. 211 Menschen konnten gerettet werden.
Bei einem neuen Schiffsunglück vor der italienischen Insel Lampedusa sind mindestens 26 Flüchtlinge ertrunken, sagte Maltas Regierungschef. Etwa 200 wurden gerettet. Doch die Rufe nach einer Änderung der EU-Flüchtlingspolitik werden lauter.
Die Bestürzung in Brüssel angesichts des Flüchtlingsdramas vor Lampedusa ist groß, wird aber wenig Konsequenzen haben. Denn die EU hält an ihrem Ziel fest: Flüchtlinge fernhalten.
Die Flüchtlinge hatten es fast nach Italien geschafft, als ihr Boot vor Lampedusa kenterte. Mindestens 114 Menschen ertranken. Die Tragödie hat eine Debatte über die Flüchtlingspolitik ausgelöst, auch der Papst schaltete sich ein.
Bundespräsident Gauck hat nach dem Unglück vor der italienischen Insel Lampedusa mehr Schutz für Flüchtlinge angemahnt. Man dürfe sie nicht in einen vorhersehbaren Tod hineinsegeln lassen. Auch Grünen-Politiker König fordert eine bessere Seenotrettung.
Eine gewaltige Grenzanlage soll die spanische Enklave Melilla in Marokko vor dem Ansturm von Flüchtlingen schützen, die nach Europa wollen. Doch immer wieder schaffen es einige hinüber. Viele Einwohner Melillas zeigen Verständnis und helfen.
