Editorial. Now more than ever, the research community should be concentrating on finding ways to reduce the incidence of dementia. The population is aging, and the number of individuals affected by dementia remains a major public health challenge. The reality is that we have no effective treatments for dementia. In the absence of treatments to cure the disorder (or even reduce the associated burden by delaying onset or reducing disability), the prevention of dementia must be a priority research topic. This article presents a case study that explores the role of one Admiral Nurse (KG) in supporting a family carer of a person living with dementia. The case study, combined with the use of a model of reflection, illustrates the process of critical thinking and analysis used by the Admiral Nurse in relation to this aspect of their role. This article also discusses the influencing factors that should be considered when determining the support required to enable family carers to meet their needs.

Patients on the older adult wards at Lancashire Care NHS Foundation Trust’s Harbour Unit in Blackpool recently took part in a five week trial to investigate the theraputic gain of tablet technology. The pilot was undertaken by 63 patients in the hospital due to their severe or enduring mental health condition or dementia. Patients self-reported their mood before and after using the tablet and also recorded their enjoyment post-activity. The results showed significant improvement in mood and engagement immediately after using tablet technology.
Several potentially modifiable risk factors for cognitive decline and dementia have been identified, including low educational attainment, smoking, diabetes, physical inactivity, hypertension, midlife obesity, depression, and perceived social isolation. Managing these risk factors in late midlife and older age may help reduce the risk of dementia; however, it is unclear whether these factors also relate to cognitive performance in older individuals without dementia. Apathy is one of the most frequent neuropsychiatric symptoms encountered in dementia. Open access. As not speaking English as a first language may lead to increased difficulties in communication with staff and other residents, we (1) tested our primary hypotheses that care home residents with dementia speaking English as a second language experience more agitation and overall neuropsychiatric symptoms, and (2) explored qualitatively how staff consider that residents' language, ethnicity, and culture might impact on how they manage agitation.
Sleep disorders in dementia cause distress and may lead to families being unable to care for someone with dementia at home. Recent Cochrane reviews found no interventions of proven effectiveness. There was no effect of light therapy and moderate evidence that melatonin was ineffective both given without knowledge of the patient's circadian rhythm. The current article updates this review by considering newer publications on interventions for sleep disorders or abnormalities of the sleep–wake cycle in people with dementia living in the community. Cholesterol is a major constituent of the brain, however, especially the myelin encircling neurons. Some research suggests that the risk of neurological diseases, such as Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease, increases in people treated with cholesterol-lowering drugs such as statins.
