Intellectual disability (ID) is associated with polypharmacy particularly off‐label psychotropics for “challenging behaviour.” NHS England introduced the “stopping over medication of people with a learning disability (LD), autism or both” (STOMP) initiative. This report gives the interim findings from our review of the use of restrictive interventions in places that provide care for people with mental health problems, a learning disability and/or autism.
The Care Quality Commission (CQC) is calling for an independent review of every person who is being held in segregation in mental health wards for children and young people and wards for people with a learning disability or autism. These reviews should examine the quality of care, the safeguards to protect the person and the plans for discharge.

The use of restraint has been a popular topic in the care sector in recent years, with restrictive practice increasingly seen as unacceptable unless in extreme cases to prevent harm. The Government’s policy Positive and Proactive Care came into place in 2014, after the Winterbourne View abuse scandal. Asperger's syndrome is an aspect of autism and, although not a mental health condition in itself, is often linked to mental health as those on the autism spectrum, including those with Asperger's, often experience mental health issues and are likely to be at increased risk of developing such health issues. This article seeks to explain what autism and Asperger's syndrome are and explore its links to a variety of mental health issues, along with forms of nursing management. The Department of Health is consulting on draft guidance on reducing the need for restraint and restrictive intervention for children and young people with learning disabilities, autistic spectrum disorder and mental health needs.
This qualitative study explored how mental health inpatients with autistic spectrum conditions experience and cope with anxiety when admitted to an acute mental health inpatient facility in the UK. Anxiety is a common characteristic for people who live with autistic spectrum conditions and whilst a plethora of studies on anxiety in this population are published which correlate anxiety with mental health service experience, little is known about the actual triggers of anxiety and its manifestations. This study adds to a body of evidence which considers anxiety experienced by people with autism. The rationale for this paper includes the need to heighten mental health practitioners’ understanding, of the responses, motivations to engage and support required to overcome fears and anxieties when admitted to a mental health inpatient unit.
