Choosing Wisely UK is part of a global initiative aimed at improving conversations between patients and their doctors and nurses.
By having discussions that are informed by the doctor, but take into account what’s important to the patient too, both sides can be supported to make better decisions about care. Often, this will help to avoid tests, treatments or procedures that are unlikely to be of benefit.

Mental health nurses in the UK are ten times more likely to be assaulted than general nurses. Research on this is increasing, but evidence on the effects of violence on staff witnesses is lacking. Ten semi-structured interviews with witnesses were conducted. In addition to the known effects on those who experience assault, analysis revealed anger, fear and guilt, leaving them seeking resolution on five identified themes relating to personal and professional conflict. Witnesses of violence were drawn towards informal forums for support, reinforcing perceptions of management as uncaring. Further research into psychiatric nurses’ lived experience of debrief and support in the workplace is needed. Login using your SSSFT NHS OpenAthens details for full text. The purpose of this integrative review was to identify, review, synthesize, thesize, and analyze the existing literature addressing compassion fatigue (CF) in healthcare providers (HCPs), with careful attention to provider role and practice area. CF needs to be better understood to identify, prevent, and treat it before it becomes problematic for HCPs. CF is representative of the cost of caring and results in physical, emotional, and psychological symptoms that contribute to the decision of the HCP to leave the profession. Compassion, the cornerstone of the NHS, was discussed at length in a one day conference for clinical staff, educators and researchers. The day was sponsored by two neighbouring mental health trusts – North Essex Partnership (NEP) and South Essex Partnership (SEPT). Over 80 delegates heard how to nurture compassion in mental health settings in times of uncertainty. They explored challenging but meaningful aspects of their work that can get overlooked in everyday practice. Speakers spoke of how compassion is affected by many different factors in the workplace which can, ultimately, impact upon patient care.

or three years Sussex Police and Sussex Partnership have operating street triage teams, which started in Eastbourne, and has expanded across East and West Sussex. This scheme sees a specially allocated police officer and a specialist mental health nurse responding to incidents where a mental health intervention is needed. It has been an enormous success meaning less people have been detained under s136 and those that have are far more likely to be taken to a hospital place of safety.
The police liaison scheme is run in Kirklees and Calderdale and involves mental health nurses working alongside officers at Halifax and Huddersfield police stations to recognise the signs of mental illness. This ensures fewer people with mental health conditions are placed on Section 136 of the Mental Health Act, held in a cell or admitted to A&E when there are more appropriate ways of providing health care for them. The scheme also enables practitioners to visit victims and witnesses at home and support police officers at the scene of an incident.
