This book provides a comprehensive approach to working with complex trauma, focusing on sexual violence, domestic abuse and child sexual abuse. Sanderson begins with an introduction to complex trauma, focusing on its symptoms, as well as on the role of dissociation and of attachment. Part 2 of the book provides guidelines for working with complex trauma, emphasising the importance of creating safety and highlighting some of the therapeutic challenges common to this work. In the third section, the author sets out practical skills to manage complex trauma symptoms, including flashbacks, nightmares, panic attacks and dissociation. In an interesting penultimate section, she focuses on post-traumatic growth, exploring how therapists can assist clients in rebuilding trust in the self and maintaining self-care. The final section of the book focuses on practitioner self-care.To read the full article, log in using your MPFT NHS OpenAthens details.
