Psychological treatment of anxiety-related problems in youth has a rich history, dating back to Sigmund Freud’s work. After decades of clinical literature and scores of treatment outcome studies, a growing consensus formed among experts that cognitive–behavioural methods were especially effective, particularly the behavioural component involving graded exposure to feared stimuli. Delivery of this treatment approach by professional therapists can involve substantial cost, so the effort by Creswell and colleagues to investigate the use of parents to deliver the treatment has practical significance, and the study’s comparison between brief guided parent-delivered cognitive–behavioural therapy (GPD-CBT) and solution-focused brief therapy (SFBT) could add to the practical value of the study, as the authors suggest that SFBT is a common form of usual treatment in the settings studied.

Following on from the publication of Safe and Effective Staffing: the Real Picture in May 2017, the RCN launched a survey of nursing and midwifery staff in the UK. The survey asked people about their last shift or day worked in health or social care. Over 30,000 responses were received in just two weeks, providing insight into staff experiences and staffing levels across the UK.
The NHS Benchmarking Network have made their mental health data available to the Centre to provide an independent commentary on what the data suggests about mental health provision in England and Wales between 2012 and 2016. This briefing is the result of our analysis, and highlights some key findings
This quality standard covers transitions for children, young people and adults between mental health hospitals and their own homes, care homes or other community settings. It includes the period before, during and after a person is admitted to, and discharged from, a mental health hospital. It describes high-quality care in priority areas for improvement.
Open access. There is a poorly understood relationship between Leadership WalkRounds (WR) and domains such as safety culture, employee engagement, burnout and work-life balance.
This quality standard covers end of life care for infants, children and young people (from birth to 18 years) who have a life-limiting condition. Life-limiting conditions are those that are expected to result in an early death for the person. It also covers support for family members and carers. It describes high-quality care in priority areas for improvement.
Recovery oriented service provisions means focusing on outcomes that are important to consumers themselves rather than to clinicians or services. Partners in Recovery (PIR) is an Australia-wide initiative designed to provide service coordination and brokerage for individuals with severe and persistent mental illness. One PIR service engaged a consumer-led research team to evaluate the service from the perspective of consumers. This consumer-led study was established to explore PIR consumers’ perceptions of outcomes they achieved through their involvement with PIR.
The purpose of the present study was to address 1) whether exercise provides protection against new-onset depression and anxiety and 2) if so, the intensity and amount of exercise required to gain protection and, lastly, 3) the mechanisms that underlie any association. To examine the mortality risk in a cohort of “hard-to-reach” polysubstance users and its putative associations with substance use. Specifically, we estimated all-cause mortality risk as a function of individual substance use indicators, and then as a function of their complex, “real-life” patterns as identified through Latent Class Analysis (LCA). Methamphetamine dependence is associated with heightened impulsivity and diminished quality of life, but the link between impulsivity and changes in quality of life during treatment has not been examined. We aimed to investigate how different elements of impulsivity predict change in quality of life in the six weeks after engaging in treatment. On Wednesday (11 October), NHS Shropshire CCG’s Governing Body will discuss the next steps in transforming out of hospital services.
In parallel to the Future Fit emergency and planned hospital care proposals, the CCG plans to launch a five year programme to improve and modernise out of hospital services. Out of hospital covers the wide-range of services that support patients to stay well, avoid hospital admission and support them with care closer to home.
A pioneering mental health crisis service run by Cambridgeshire and Peterborough NHS Foundation Trust has received more than 14,500 calls in its first year.
The First Response Service – which can be contacted via the NHS 111 helpline and selecting option 2 - operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and gives people in crisis direct access to mental health advice and help them to avoid unnecessary visits to hospital.
In the first 12 months the number of people visiting local accident and emergency departments has fallen by 21 per cent.
