Die Brüsseler Kommission hofft, mit massiver Förderung die unterschiedlichen nationalen eID-Systeme der Mitgliedsländer aus ihrem Inseldasein herauszuholen.
Demnach hat Apple in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Sicherheitsspezialisten Gemalto die Integration dahingehend betrieben, dass Kunden künftig ein iPhone oder ein iPad mit Mobilfunkmodem übers Web bestellen und komplett über Apples iTunes-Software aktivieren könnten – also anders als jetzt, auch die Daten für den Zugang zu einem Mobilfunknetz erhalten. Weder Apple noch Gemalto äußerten sich bisher dazu, aber die Idee erscheint verlockend: Das Subscriber Identity Module, kurz SIM, ist ohnehin nur ein Chip, der bisher über eine serielle Schnittstelle (recht langsam) mit dem Rest des Handys kommuniziert und unter anderem die Zuordnung von Kundendaten zu Mobilfunknetzen enthält. Diese Zuordnung trägt der Netzbetreiber vor der Auslieferung an die Kunden in die Karte ein und nach Übergabe der Karte schaltet er sie für die Nutzung frei (Provisionierung).
Bundesinnenminister Thomas de Maizière hat den neuen elektronischen Personalausweis bei einem Pressegespräch in Berlin am Freitag als Einstieg in ein vertrauenswürdiges Identitätsmanagement in der Online-Welt gelobt. Allein durch die Möglichkeit zur Online-Kontoeröffnung seien Einsparungen von 25 Millionen Euro möglich. Der Ausweis, der laut de Maizière "keinen Zugewinn für die innere Sicherheit" bietet, sei sehr sicher: "Er ist keineswegs bisher elektronisch erfolgreich angegriffen worden, das hat der Chaos Computer Club mir selbst gegenüber gesagt." De Maiziére verglich die Sicherheit des Ausweises mit dem Tragen eines Motorradhelms: "Er schützt Ihren Kopf, hilft aber nicht, wenn Sie stürzen und sich am Knie verletzen."
Obwohl laut Bundesnetzagentur "noch einiges zu klären" ist, werden ab 1. Juli 112-Notrufe vom Handy nur noch dann durchgestellt, wenn eine SIM-Karte eingelegt und aktiviert ist. Ziel der Maßnahme ist eine Eindämmung des Notruf-Missbrauchs.
