Abstract

Investigated the effects of chlordiazepoxide (librium) on the consummatory (attack) components of the agonistic sequence of adult male Siamese fighting fish. 12 pairs were tested individually in 3 liters of water containing either 30 mg/ml of chlordiazepoxide or no drug. Each pair was visually separated, prior to a direct encounter. The frequencies of biting, jaw-locking, and air gulping (an arousal measure) were recorded. Drugged pairs exhibited significantly less biting and no jaw-locking. Air gulping frequency was not significantly altered by the drug. Unexpected "mating-like" behaviors were observed in drugged pairs only. These drug effects occurred without any noticeable sedation. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2004 APA, all rights reserved)
