Abstract

This book provides the state-of-the-art knowledge in continuum mechanics related to fluid dynamics. It presents a link between the turbulent flows of classical Newtonian fluids and the laminar and turbulent flows of non-Newtonian fluids needed in applications such as food processing and polymeric flows. The presentation of the monograph ranges from the fundamental to practical aspects. For the fundamental aspects, the authors present some kinematic and dynamic considerations of constitutive relations for the fluid and flow stress fields. For the practical aspects, current methods of solution including the direct numerical simulation, the scale-resolving simulation and the Reynolds-averaged method are presented for both Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluids. A discussion of emerging technologies associated with multi-scale methods concludes the text. The book contains seven chapters: 1. Introduction; 2. Tensor analysis, invariants and representations; 3. Kinematics and dynamics; 4. Constitutive equations: general principles; 5. Non-Newtonian and viscoelastic fluids; 6. Turbulent flows; 7. The Boltzmann equation. Besides, the reader can find an appendix, an index and references. Reviewer: Ruxandra Stavre (Bucureşti)
