Abstract
A numerical model for simulating the process of the delta formation is presented. It is based on the continuity equation for water and sediment flow on a lattice combined with a phenomenological sedimentation-/erosion law.
Different delta types according to the classification of Coleman and Wright are reproduced using different parameters and erosion rules. The structures of the
calculated patterns are analyzed in space and time and compared with real delta
patterns. Furthermore the switching phenomena of the delta could be observed
and compared with geological records for the Mississippi river.
