A Self-Assembl ed Unit Comprising 12 Squaraine Dyes Built Up from TwoStar-ShapedHexasquara inyl-Benzene Molecules

Abstract

We describe the aggregate formation and optical properties of astar-shaped hexaarylbenzene with six squar-aine chromophores (= hexasquarainyl benzene). Comprehen-sive concentration-dependence studies in acetone/CHCl3 mixtures reveala strong propensity to form discrete dimeric aggregates with ahighbinding constant in excess of 106 m@1.Inthis context, alarge hypsochromic shift of almost 2700 cm@1 was found in the absorption spectrum, indicating H-typeexciton coupling. The aggregate band is character-ised by avery small band width of only 560 cm@1,probably causedbyexchange narrowing. Both experimental and com-putational methods were used to elucidate the supramolec-ular aggregate structure, which is assumed to consistoftwo stacked hexasquarainyl benzene monomers.
