Yet for people to realize the vast promise of networked computing, Internet applications must become dramatically more powerful and easier to use. Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology holds the key to these futuristic applications with the promise of advanced features, adaptive functionality and intuitive interfaces. We group Internet applications into four categories: 1) user modeling, 2) discovery and analysis of remote information sources, 3) information integration, and 4) web-site management. The seven papers in this special issue represent some of the latest and most exciting research in three of the four categories. This introduction attempts to place the special-issue papers in context, but we caution readers that the field is too young and moving too quickly for a comprehensive survey article.
