Abstract
This paper explores the contribution of linguistic research into lexical organization to the construction of a lexical knowledge base. It is proposed that a linguistically-motivated template entry should be designed for each type of word, and that these entries might then be instantiated from on-line resources for individual words. Specifically, the lexical knowledge of a speaker of English is explored through a case study of verbs of sound. Then some aspects of a linguistically-motivated template entry for verbs of sound in a lexical knowledge base are outlined. The paper closes with a brief discussion of how the properties of lexical organization can be used to take maximal advantage of information available in existing on-line lexical resources
