Autreau began looking for inspiration outside his own imaginative powers and the Italian tradition for the first time with his fourth play, Les Amants ignorants (1720), 4 for which he adapted, with somewhat anodyne and unconvincing modifications to conform with the bienséances, the sexual trials and tribulations of Daphnis and Chloë.
