The characters in Petronius’ novel Satyricon sometimes bear names which are providentially appropriate. Several of these are dealt with bere, and their signifìcance explained. A few of them seem to be creations of Petronius, like Encolpius and Ascyltos, and also Trimalchio . Of these, Encolpius was first introduced into Roman onomastics via Petronius.
