Please Sir? Can we have some more? - lessons from Free School Meal initiatives
C. Harper, and L. Wood. Research report, School Food Trust, (January 2009)
Abstract
School meals can make a significant contribution to a child’s dietary intake and influence overall health and well being. Costs of a meal for those who pay vary. Local Authorities (LAs) have a duty to provide free meals. It has been estimated that, in England, 334,000 pupils who could have a free school meal are not currently registered, and that a further 210,000 pupils registered do not take up their entitlement. Stigmatisation can act as a key emotive barrier inhibiting.
