34--37(July 2007)
Abstract
Music writer and critic Royal S. Brown is profiled and interviewed, with a focus on his book, "Film Musings: An Anthology of Selected Writings from 'Fanfare Magazine'" (Scarecrow Press, 2007). Brown was the author of a film music column in "Fanfare Magazine" from 1983 to 2001 that discussed the relationships between film and music. He began reviewing film music in 1970 for "High Fidelity" magazine at a time when film music was considered an inferior offshoot of classical music. Brown developed a method for reviewing film music that involved discussing the film itself, and the ways the music relates to it. Brown stopped writing for "Fanfare" because he felt the quality of movies and film scores have continued to degrade.
