Validation of an exact relation in non-equilibrium statistical mechanics for a model of a sheared fluid

Abstract

One of the central problems in statistical physics is to understand the universal statistical principles underlying systems away from thermal equilibrium. Recently, an exact relation has been derived for the transition rates of a system in a driven steady state, which can be considered as the non-equilibrium couterpart of detailed balance R.M.L. Evans, Phys. Rev. Lett. 92, 150601 (2004). We present numerical results for a sheared fluid model consisting of pairwise interacting rotors on a ring. The dynamics of these rotors in the fluid phase show excellent agreement with the predictions obtained from the non-equilibrium detailed balance conditions up to very high shear rates, i.e. very far away from equilibrium.
